FAQ

What is Emoti-OS?

Emoti-OS is a speculative chatbot, (a computer program that mimics conversation with people using artificial intelligence), with a visual and emotionally driven character. It uses conversations with its users to understand the collective mood of pupils at Plymouth School of Creative Arts (UK). It is created for and with these pupils to give students a voice and a way to express how they collectively feel about important matters at the school. It explores if awareness and empathy can be nurtured through such conversations, claiming these technologies for artistic production rather than commercial exploitation.

Emoti-OS has been created by the i-DAT Collective with pupils and staff at Plymouth School of Creative Arts, Intercity and Controlled Frenzy.

The project is funded through Plymouth City Council’s DATA Play initiative, i-DAT with Plymouth University, Plymouth School of Creative Arts and Intercity.

How does Emoti-OS work?

User can interact with Emoti-OS through two interfaces.

The first is a physical installation in the school atrium at Plymouth School of Creative Arts (UK). Here pupils can select an emoji button which represent one of the seven system emoji’s (joy, sadness, excitement, fear, confusion, anger and disgust) they most relate to.

The second is the online chatbot here at Emoti-OS.me, where users also can select a representative emoji of how they feel, but which also engage users in a deeper conversation. Pupils in the school can also pose questions to their peers through Emoti-OS.

Emoti-OS is designed to respond to users conversationally like a human. So, when you send Emoti-OS a text response, it processes this and generates a conversational response back to you. Emoti-OS’s response may be in the form of text or image.

The information (chat) provided is aggregate to identify the mood of the individuals interacting with the Chatbot. This is done by analysing the tone of the aggregated conversations being had with the chatbot using the IBM Watson™ Tone Analyzer service.

Emoti-OS is a prototype and therefor sometimes also gets installed and tested in other places.

What is the purpose of Emoti-OS?

Emoti-OS tries to understand the collective mood of people it talks to. It does so to inform research on the impact of systems like this in social situations. It explores if awareness and empathy can be nurtured through such conversations, claiming these technologies for artistic production rather than commercial exploitation.

The purpose of the first iteration of Emoti-OS (13 Nov. – 19 Dec. 2017) was to determine the collective mood of Plymouth School of Creative Arts’ body of students by analysing the tone of their conversations with the chatbot, (a computer program that mimics conversation with people using artificial intelligence). It speculated whether a chatbot with a visual and emotionally driven character could engage and reflect the collective mood of a school in real time. Whilst doing so, could it also act as a channel for pupils and staff to express how they feel and see how others feel, in real-time, about their learning environment.

The second iteration of Emoti-OS for Factory Settings took place at Tate Exchange (31 January – 2 February 2018). It drew people into a brief conversation about how they feel about the act of ‘making’ in education and the act of artificial systems ‘making’, simultaneously reflecting the collective mood of those to whom it talked too. This iteration also integrated sentiment analysis of the the conversations being had with the chatbot using the IBM Watson™ Tone Analyzer service. The intention being to further speculate around the idea of systems measuring our emotive feelings in human-machine conversations.

Who made Emoti-OS?

Emoti-OS is a collaborative art project produced in partnership between a group of pupils from Plymouth School of Creative Arts (PSCA), i-DAT with Plymouth University, Intercity and Controlled Frenzy.

Is Emoti-OS human?

No. Emoti-OS is an AI-driven chatbot that uses conversational structures and sentiment analysis to communicate.

How does Emoti-OS use my data?

To do this we collect, process and store the following data:
• information about your computer (including your IP address, geographical location, browser type, referral source, length of visit and number of page views)
• information (chat) that you provide through chatting with the Emoti-OS chatbot

The information (chat) provided is aggregated to identify the mood of the individuals interacting with the Chatbot. This is done by analysing the tone of the aggregated conversations being had with the chatbot using the IBM Watson™ Tone Analyzer service.

We will not give your information to third parties and will ensure this is only used for the above purpose and is kept securely.
